Another advantage is that you can consult with people in your community on how satisfied they have been with your local moving company. Why use a nationwide, overly corporate moving company when you can use a local company that will not charge you ridiculous prices. Customer satisfaction will be the top concern of a local company because they will take pride in the type of reputation they have with their community. After all, you will entrust your belongings in the hands of strangers, so you need to, at least, make sure they are experienced professional movers. So, the best way to establish if a moving company will take good care of your belongings, during the moving process, is to ask the right questions, at the right time. The right time is always before hiring them. This will help you save time and money! 1. Does your company have the necessary licenses? This is a common sense question and the first to ask any moving company you’re considering to hire for your move. Professional moving companies usually mention their licenses on their website and, if you visit their location, you will be able to see their certificates on various walls. However, if you don’t have access to evidence that they are licensed, you should ask a representative of the company about this during your first conversation with them. Any professional moving company has to be a member of the American Mover and Storage Association, which guarantees that their company respects the necessary federal laws, as well as of the Better Business Bureau, a membership that proves their reliability. A moving company that offers cross country moving services has to have an USDOT number issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). You can easily check for this number online and see if the company has the USDOT. 2. What services do you offer? It’s important to know all the services that a moving company offers. The smaller moving companies might not have the necessary equipment to move voluminous or heavy items, such as pianos or pieces of furniture that can’t be disassembled. Some companies may provide disassembling and assembling services, which are useful if you have a lot of furniture to move to a different location. There are moving companies that also offer packing and unpacking services, very helpful for all types of moves, but these are usually available for extra cost. It’s important to know all the services the moving company is offering, whether we’re talking about packing and unpacking, disassembling and assembling, loading and unloading and so on. This way you can be sure you will get all the services you need for a successful and stress-free move. 3. Do you have an arbitration program? An arbitration program is very useful in case the customers raise claims against moving companies and these can’t be settle amicably. Instead of going to court and wasting a lot of time and money, the arbitration company that collaborates with the moving company will give you access to an easy and fast way to settle the dispute. An arbitration company is also very useful for the moving company because they will help them respect all the rules and regulations imposed by the FMCSA. The FMCSA actually require the moving companies to have an arbitration program in place. 4. Do you give written estimates? Some moving companies give estimates regarding moving costs by phone or email. However, you need to know that this is never enough! If you want to make sure you know the exact price you’re going to pay for the move, you need to request a written estimate which won’t have to exceed the price you’ve discussed initially. If you have a written estimate, your move will be protected by the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission, which means that you won’t have to pay more than 25% over your estimate. The best way to get a correct estimate is to make sure you give the movers accurate information about the move, such as the distance the moving trucks will have to cross to get to the destination, as well as the number of men and trucks you need. It will also help to know what payment methods they accept and how much will extra services cost. 5. How will you be handling my items? It’s very important to know how the movers will handle your items, especially if you have antique pieces of furniture or other valuable belongings. The movers will also have to protect the interior of both your former and new home when moving your things. They should use all types of accessories to protect the floors, walls, corners and door frames, like moving blankets, carpet films, corner guards, and foam. The moving company should work only with experienced movers, who really know what they are doing and how to bring everything in one piece to the destination. It’s useful for the movers to come in advance and measure doorways, turns, elevators and stairways, so they can be prepared for the moving process. local moving company

Moving With Storage

Edit: U-Box has changed a lot since I wrote this article. For my more recent experiences with U-Box, please see U-Box Review Part 2. Edit: For those of you interested in sending your U-Box to Canada, check out Moving to Canada with U-Haul U-Box. Hopefully you can avoid the problems I ran into. After graduating from college, I have been bouncing from one end of the country to the other as my beau and I peruse our graduate degrees. Having moved twice now in the past three years, and about to do it again come this summer, I’d like to think I’ve gotten it pretty much down. When it comes to moving, the perpetually broke college/grad student generally has three options: Ship everything. This works best if you are leaving a dorm and have little to no furniture to take with you. It also works best if you have an intermediate location (ie parent, friend or relative) to hold your stuff and ship it to you once you have a new address. I did this as I moved out of my dorm in Portland, OR, and into my apartment for grad school in Pittsburgh, PA. Move it yourself. This generally requires a truck and some burly friends. I have steered clear of this generally because of long highway hours and gas prices. (Though now that I actually have a car to move cross-country anyway, I may be revisiting this option). However, my favorite moving option so far has been option #3: portable moving and storage, made famous by PODS and, in my opinion, perfected by the U-Haul U-Box.Here’s how it works: you call Moving Company and tell them that you’re moving and what size crate you want. Moving Company drops off a crate at your doorstep at your requested date. After you’ve filled the crate, you call them, and they take it away, store it for however long you need. When you arrive at your new home, you call up Moving Company and they drop off the crate at your new doorstep. You unload the crate, and they take their crate back. So easy. So convenient. As my boyfriend and I prepared to leave Pittsburgh for St. Louis, we had originally planed to do option #1 again--ship everything--but despite getting all our furniture on Craig’s List, we came across a couple pieces we decided were worth keeping. This, of course, made option #1 unfeasible, and so began our research into on-demand storage and shipping. PODSStarted in 1998, PODS is perhaps the most well-known on-demand storage company, if not the pioneer of the business.Their containers come in three sizes: 8x7x7, 8x8x12, and 8x8x16, however only the smallest and biggest sizes are available for moving.  They also partner with packing services if you need a hand boxing and unboxing your precious items.Despite PODS being well-known and well-established, I found them to be pricey and inflexible the more I looked.  First of all, they require your email address to give you a quote, and for most long distance moves you end up having to call them anyway.  I personally like to shop around a little more before dealing with a live person. When I called them and requested a quote on their smallest container, the representative’s first question was not “Where are you moving to/from?” but “How much are you moving?”  Upon my response of “A 1 bedroom apartment,” she immediately answered “Oh, the 8x7x7 won’t be big enough.”  But of course the mid-size is not available for moving, so she proceeded to try to talk me into getting the 8x8x16 which would be ridiculous.  Besides this, I was rather miffed that she imply I didn’t know how much stuff I had in my own apartment.  Yes, on paper it was a 1 bedroom apartment, but it was so small it might as well have been a studio.  Plus all we were moving was a mattress, a sofa, a table and an assortment of boxes.  Even the 8x7x7 would have been spacious.I finally got her to give me a quote for the 8x7x7, and, as a perpetually broke grad student, the price made my teeth grit:  $99 a month for storage (we would be storing for 2-3 months), and about $900 to ship from Pittsburgh to St. Louis.  With two people it was certainly doable in our budget, but it would still hurt. U-Haul U-BoxAt the time we were moving, spring of 2009, U-Haul had just started their U-Box program. We didn’t even know about it until my dad stumbled across it in a fortuitous web search.Unlike PODS, U-Box has one container size that is a little smaller: 7.5x7x5 However they make it easy to get as many as you need. They have a convenient chart on their home page clearly showing approximately how much each box holds, and how many boxes you might need for any given number of rooms. If I recall correctly, you can even have them drop off an extra one if your not sure how many you need, and if you don’t use it, you don’t pay anything extra. The added benefit of these smaller boxes is that they take up a smaller footprint, which is really nice on narrow, downtown streets. While the smallest of the PODS is 7 feet wide, a U-Box fits neatly into a standard sized parking space without sticking out into the street. The standardizes size also lets U-Haul easily stack a bunch of these on a flatbed truck which probably helps them keep shipping costs down. The cost for a U-Box was significantly cheaper than for the smallest of the PODS. One U-Box (which fit the contents of our tiny apartment perfectly) cost about $60 a month to store, and shipping from Pittsburgh to St. Louis was less than $500.You can get a quote online without an email address or phone call, and can even book your U-Box online. ConclusionWhatever moving options you pick of course depends on your needs. U-Box may be cheaper, but their boxes are also smaller. If you’ve got an eight foot sofa, you’re probably going to have to go with PODS.Needless to say, we chose U-Box for our last move, and will be considering them again in the future. In my experience, I found them much more convenient and cost-effective, and the personnel friendly and helpful. Plus the smaller box fit our small amount of furniture perfectly.Of course, my experience with PODS ended with getting a quote. If you have had experience with them, or have discovered other lesser known portable storage companies, feel free to share!

This can mean trouble if something that weighs a small amount is worth a great deal and gets damaged, such as a 1500$ computer that weighs 5 pounds, you will only be able to claim 3$ in coverage compensation. These above polices are covered by the US Department of Transportation under Federal Law.3. Third-Party Moving InsuranceThis type of insurance can be added on to your coverage if you choose Released-Value liability. Some moving companies will offer this coverage as an option on top of your move, or you can choose to purchase it from another third party. Before making a purchase of any extra insurance, check your homeowners's insurance policy to see what your plan covers already. Hiring Movers vs Moving Yourself: The DebatePros & Cons Of Performing a DIY Move -Pros- 1. The first has to be saving money, with the high rate of cross country moves today, it can cost upwards of 4000 dollars to move a 3 bedroom house with a moving company. 2. Packing yourself so you know where all your important belongings are - this can be taken care of with careful packing and labeling though. 3. You will not have to compete for timing of a moving companies' availability, you are on your own schedule. -Cons- 1. Obviously, actually performing the arduous process of moving all your possessions is a problem or hassle for most, especially if time constraints or physical problems make you unable to perform this process. 2. Risk for damage & personal harm is increased - Professional movers are just that, they are pros and have a lot of practice, which you may or may not have. 3. Time - If you plan on driving all your stuff in a moving truck across the country, it will take at least a few days. Pricing Differences: When you consider the price of renting a moving truck, gas, hotels and food for the journey, moving is just plain expensive, no matter if you do it yourself or hire a moving company. I recommend pricing both options to see if the dollar difference of hiring movers is worth it to you. If you are moving for work related reasons, your company may be able to offset some of the cost, if not many of your expenses can be tax deductible. Check to see what options you have for tax deductions here: http://www.irs.com/articles/tax-deduction-moving-expenses Getting Free Quotes from long distance moving companies: It is best to get multiple quotes for your long distance move to compare as many prices as possible, this is easily done by visiting a number of moving sites online that offer this type of service. Also you can call them independently and request a quote for your move from each company. Tips for saving money on your interstate move:#1 Downsize Everything - Sell or give away everything you don't need A good rule of thumb while considering what you really need is "have I used this thing in the past three months?" If the answer is no, you should probably get rid of it. Sell it, give it away, or.... GASP! .... throw it in the trash. Long distance moving companies charge by weight (about 1$ per pound) so getting rid of the extra clutter can save you quite a bit of money if you are planning on hiring a moving company. If you are moving yourself this concept still applies, one less box is one less trip up the stairs or back and forth from the moving truck. Places to get rid of your stuff: - Secondhand clothes stores like Buffalo Exchange for your unwanted clothes - Craigslist for unwanted and older furniture and other stuff that has value - Facebook & Twitter: send out the good word for your friends to pick up your unwanted stuff - Drop the rest at Salvation Army and help out the populace! #2 Break down your furniture for better space usage If your furniture comes apart, plan on taking it apart. It can save you space, make it much easier to carry, and make taking it through doorways much easier. Saving space can save money by renting a smaller truck or having a smaller space allocated for you in a moving company truck, a win-win all around. Although it does take time, it will be worth it, I promise! #3 Deduct Expenses on your tax forms Did you know that many moving related expenses, especially when moving for work, are tax deductible? Depending on your tax bracket, this can be like getting a 30% discount on all your moving expenses from hotels to food to packing supplies. Find out if you qualify at the IRS website here: http://www.irs.com/articles/tax-deduction-moving-expenses #4 Time Your Move correctly for better pricing Competition raises pricing for any industry, especially in the moving industry. Since most people move during the summer months, July being the most hectic time for movers, going against the grain can keep your rate down. Also the middle of the month is less competitive, so if you have to move during the summer try to pick a time during the middle of the month. The time of year is the cheapest time of the year to move will be between April and October. Even if you are planning to move yourself by renting a truck, gas, lodging and renting a truck will likely be cheaper during this time of year. #5 Get Multiple Quotes From Moving Companies or Rental Truck Companies Shopping around is always a good option when you are making a large purchase, like hiring cross country movers. Here is a website that offers multiple free quotes from licensed movers, filling out the form only takes about 3 minutes - www.findcrosscountrymovers.com - Do this about 3 months prior to your move, if you do it sooner it will be harder to get a proper quote. 3 Nationwide Companies for Truck Rental: U Haul Website Penske Website Enterprise Trucks Website Ryder Website Tips on Building Your New Community & Finding the Hot-SpotsGetting Acquainted to Your New Home City Can Be Easier with a few online tools Moving to a new place can be hard on your social life, especially if you are coming from a place where you have long-ingrained family and friend connections. With so much new ground to explore, keeping yourself busy in the first few months and finding spaces to interact with the locals, you can more easily acclimate yourself to your new city. Great Sources for creating a new social environment for yourself: www.Meetup.org is my favorite source for finding new friends & community. From Rock Climbing, Music, to Science & art, programming to jui-jitsu, they have groups for something you are into. I have been to a few meetups and had a great time and met cool people. When you don't know anyone in a city, sites like meetup.org can help you find your new community outside of work. Here are a few other options like Meetup.org www.bigtent.com www.groupspaces.com Give them a try to let me know what you think in the comments, I'd love to hear your stories! Looking to find great places to eat and drink in your new city? I use Yelp.com due to the real user feedback, community and ease of use. UrbanSpoon.com is also a great site, try their apps for your phone when you are out and about exploring, it's a great way to find a good place on the go. Or.... ask your new friends from your Meetup what their favorite local places are! Resources For Setting Up Your New LifeThese are all things you can do before you move, some right before like changing your address and forwarding your mail, the others will help you find the right place in your desired location. Choose carefully your new position. I think a good option is renting a home or apartment for a few months before you sign a long-term lease if you are not familiar with the new city that you're moving to. This can be a little more expensive, but it can avoid being trapped in an area of town that you don't like for a year, which can be well worth the extra few hundred bucks a month.
